Description

Ceramide NP (Ceramide 3)

Bio-Identical Barrier Reconstruction for Medical-Grade Skincare.

🛡️ Skin Barrier Architect

Mimics the skin's natural lipid structure to repair the "brick and mortar" barrier, providing instant relief for sensitized skin.

💧 Moisture Sealant

Drastically reduces Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) by creating a protective, breathable film on the stratum corneum.

🔬 High Purity (98%+)

Onerchem Ceramide NP is a highly purified crystalline lipid, ensuring excellent safety profiles for hypoallergenic formulations.

Formulator's Guide to Ceramide NP

Ceramide NP is a high-melting-point lipid. For optimal efficacy, incorporate it into the oil phase and heat to 85°C - 90°C until fully transparent before emulsification.

Recommended Dosage: 0.05% - 1.0%

Synergy Tip: To achieve a "true barrier repair" effect, we suggest formulating with a 3:1:1 molar ratio of Ceramides, Cholesterol, and Fatty Acids.

Formulation Phase Guide — Where & How to Add Ceramide NP
Ceramide NP is lipid-soluble. Incorrect phase addition is the most common cause of incorporation failure.
⚠ Oil Phase Required
A
Water Phase
Aqueous base
Deionised water, humectants (glycerin, butylene glycol), water-soluble actives (HA, Niacinamide, TXA). Ceramide NP is not added here.
🌡 60–75°C
B
← Add here · Oil Phase
Ceramide NP goes in Phase B
Melt Ceramide NP into the oil phase with emollients (Squalane, esters) and emulsifiers at 70–75°C. Ensure complete dissolution before emulsification.
🌡 70–75°C
C
Emulsification
Combine A into B
Slowly add water phase to oil phase under homogenisation. Ceramide NP disperses evenly within the emulsifier network. Maintain 60–70°C during mixing.
🌡 60–70°C

Add heat-sensitive actives
Below 40°C: add peptides, fragrance, preservatives, pH-sensitive actives. Verify final emulsion pH at 5.0–6.5 for optimal skin compatibility.

Barrier Science Series · Synergy Ecosystem
Ceramide NP anchors the complete barrier repair stack
Onerchem's four barrier actives address distinct repair mechanisms. Combined, they restore lipid bilayer integrity, reduce TEWL, and support long-term skin resilience.
⭐ Core Active
Ceramide NP
Rebuilds the lipid lamellar structure between corneocytes. Primary TEWL barrier. Restores skin's natural ceramide-to-cholesterol-to-fatty acid ratio.
0.1% – 1.0% dose
Synergy
Squalane
Lightweight emollient that mimics sebum. Helps Ceramide NP integrate into the intercellular lipid matrix without occlusion.
2–6% dose
Synergy
Sodium Hyaluronate
Fills the aqueous compartment while Ceramide repairs the lipid layer. Dual-action: surface hydration + deep reservoir fill.
0.1–0.2% dose
Synergy
D-Panthenol
Pro-vitamin B5 that activates keratinocyte differentiation. Accelerates barrier recovery and reduces inflammation during repair.
0.5–2% dose
Ingredient Compatibility
pH 5.0 – 6.5
✓ Compatible
✓ Squalane, Shea Butter, plant esters — Oil phase companions; enhance Ceramide NP dispersion in lipid matrix
✓ Sodium Hyaluronate, D-Panthenol — Full barrier repair ecosystem; address different repair layers simultaneously
✓ Niacinamide — Stimulates endogenous ceramide synthesis; synergistic with exogenous Ceramide NP supplementation
✓ Alpha-Bisabolol, Allantoin — Anti-inflammatory pairing; supports barrier repair in sensitive or reactive skin formulas
✓ Matrixyl 3000, Pro-Xylane — Anti-aging peptides complement ceramide barrier work; add peptides in cool-down phase
⚠ Use with Caution
⚠ High-concentration surfactants — Strong detergents can disrupt the lamellar structure Ceramide NP is building; keep surfactant levels low in leave-on products
⚠ High-load AHAs / BHAs — Exfoliant systems are mechanistically opposed to barrier repair; use in separate product lines or with lower acid concentrations
✗ Incompatible
✗ Pure water phase addition — Ceramide NP is not water-soluble; adding to aqueous phase without proper emulsifier system causes visible precipitation and failed emulsion
✗ Processing below melting point without solubiliser — Ceramide NP melts at ~80°C; incomplete dissolution results in white specks and uneven active distribution

Pro Tip · Solubilisation
If formulating a water-based serum, use a ceramide pre-dispersion or solubiliser system (e.g. PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil) at a 4:1 ratio to Ceramide NP before adding to the aqueous phase. This prevents precipitation and ensures even distribution without requiring an oil phase.

Ceramide NP Technical Support Hub

Expert answers for formulators and procurement managers.

1. What are the specific temperature and solvent requirements for complete dissolution?
+
Ceramide NP is a high-purity crystalline lipid with a high melting point (approx. 90-105°C). It must be added to the oil phase and heated to at least 90°C. We recommend using polar oils like Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (MCT) or Isopropyl Myristate as solvents. Adding a small amount of lecithin or phytosterols can significantly lower the recrystallization temperature.
2. Why is the "Molar Ratio" so important in barrier repair formulations?
+
Clinical studies show that the skin's lipid barrier consists of Ceramides, Cholesterol, and Free Fatty Acids. Using Ceramide NP alone is effective, but using a 3:1:1 molar ratio mimics the natural lamellar structure of the stratum corneum, accelerating barrier recovery by up to 40% compared to single-ingredient formulas.
3. How can I prevent the finished cream from becoming "grainy" over time?
+
"Graininess" is usually caused by Ceramide recrystallization. This occurs if the cooling process is too rapid or the oil phase cannot hold the lipid. Ensure slow, controlled cooling and maintain a final formulation pH between 5.0 and 7.0. Using a high-shear homogenizer during the emulsification stage is also critical.
4. Is Ceramide NP suitable for post-procedure (laser/peel) skincare?
+
Absolutely. Ceramide NP is bio-identical and non-irritating. It is highly recommended for medical-grade "repair" products. It helps reduce erythema (redness) and trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) in compromised skin, making it a staple for clinical skincare lines.
5. Does Onerchem’s Ceramide NP comply with Vegan and Cruelty-free standards?
+
Yes. Our Ceramide NP is produced via a high-tech fermentation process using yeast, making it 100% plant-derived/vegan. It is non-GMO, BSE/TSE free, and has not been tested on animals, meeting all major global clean beauty standards (Ecocert/COSMOS compliant).
