Why Ferulic Acid
1
Stabilises Vitamin C and extends shelf life
Ferulic Acid acts as a sacrificial antioxidant — it preferentially donates electrons to quench free radicals before they can oxidise Vitamin C derivatives. At 0.5%, it measurably extends the colourless period of 3-O-EAA and L-Ascorbic Acid formulas, reducing yellowing and active loss over shelf life.
2
Doubles the photoprotective efficacy of VC + VE
Published research demonstrated that combining Ferulic Acid with Vitamin C and Vitamin E doubled the photoprotective effect against UV-induced oxidative damage compared to VC + VE alone — a commercially significant enhancement to antioxidant day serum claims without changing the sunscreen system.
3
Independent antioxidant activity
Ferulic Acid is not just a stabiliser for other actives. Its phenolic hydroxyl group directly scavenges reactive oxygen species — superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen — providing antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory benefit relevant to photoaging, PIH, and anti-pollution positioning.
The VC + VE + Ferulic Acid Regeneration Cycle
Antioxidant Synergy
Why this trio outperforms any single antioxidant
Step 1
Ferulic Acid quenches first
Acts as the first line of defence — absorbing incoming free radicals before oxidative stress reaches Vitamin C or Vitamin E. This sacrificial role extends the active lifetime of both co-antioxidants.
Step 2
Vitamin E regenerates Ferulic Acid
Tocopherol reduces oxidised Ferulic Acid back to its active form, extending the protective window beyond what either active could sustain alone — while simultaneously providing antioxidant defence at the lipid-water interface.
Step 3
Vitamin C closes the cycle
Ascorbic acid regenerates oxidised tocopherol back to active Vitamin E, completing a self-reinforcing cycle. All three antioxidants remain effective longer — and the Vitamin C derivative survives more oxidative events before degrading.

Ingredient Compatibility
✓ Synergistic Combinations
✓3-O-EAA / AA2G — Primary stabilisation partner; doubles photoprotective efficacy of the VC serum system
✓Tocopherol (Vitamin E) — Completes the antioxidant regeneration cycle; essential pairing
✓Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, Alpha-Arbutin — Full brightening stack; no interaction
✓Matrixyl 3000, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 — Compatible at pH 5.5–6.0 in cool-down phase
✓ Compatible
✓Ceramides, Squalane, Panthenol — Barrier repair stack; neutral interaction
✓Ergothioneine, CoQ10 — Antioxidant layering; complementary mechanisms
✗ Avoid
✗GHK-Cu — Ferulic Acid chelates Cu²⁺ ions, reducing copper peptide complex stability
✗pH above 7.0 — Hydrolysis and loss of antioxidant efficacy above neutral pH
Target Applications
Vitamin C Serums
The definitive stabiliser for 3-O-EAA and L-Ascorbic Acid formulas. Prevents yellowing, extends shelf life, and boosts UV protection claims.
Antioxidant Day Serums
The VC + VE + Ferulic Acid stack is the standard architecture for premium antioxidant defence against environmental and photoaging.
Brightening Formulas
Supports PIH and UV pigmentation formulas as an antioxidant co-active. Reduces oxidative stress that drives melanocyte stimulation.
Eye Contour Products
Low-dose antioxidant protection for the periorbital area. Compatible with peptide-based eye serums at pH 5.5–6.0.
Sunscreen Boosters
Enhances the net photoprotective effect of SPF formulas through free radical scavenging — complementary to UV filters, not a replacement.
Anti-Pollution Formulas
Quenches particulate matter-generated ROS. Growing claim category for urban skincare positioned against pollution-induced aging.

Technical FAQ

Q1: How can I manage the characteristic odor of Ferulic Acid?
High-purity Ferulic Acid has a faint, characteristic vanilla-like or slightly smoky scent. In high-concentration serums, this can become more pronounced over time due to trace degradation into vanillin. To manage this, we recommend maintaining an acidic pH (3.0-3.5) and using a small amount of oil-soluble masking agents or pairing it with Ascorbyl Palmitate to stabilize the overall matrix.
Q2: Can Ferulic Acid be formulated with Retinol?
Yes, they are excellent partners. Ferulic Acid provides immediate antioxidant defense, while Retinol works on long-term skin renewal. However, since Retinol is sensitive to pH, many formulators prefer to use Ferulic Acid in a daytime serum to boost UV filters, and reserve Retinol for nighttime use.
